Me, My Share and the Coastal Clean-up

"Love the Environment, Clean the River"

Today I will bring you to a place where the environment is the top priority. Let's join the cleanup drive in Subic Bay, Philippines.

I went to a regular river and coastal clean-up activity that was held in Subic Bay Freeport Zone (SBFZ) last November 16, 2013. It came to my knowledge that this is a kick-off event for the monthly cleanup idea of the Subic Freeport stakeholders aiming to sustain the tourist-friendly beauty and biodiversity of Subic Bay.

Luckily, I had a chance to have a photo taken at the banner in front of the stage there proudly wearing my My Share shirt. :)

According to one of the organizers, this activity is a joint project of Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA), the city government of Olongapo, the Subic Bay Workforce Development Foundation, Inc. (SBWDFI), the Department of Education and other volunteer organizations in the community.

Thousands of volunteers from Zambales, Olongapo and Bataan join the initiative to clean the river and the coastal areas of Subic Bay and Olongapo City. It's hot Saturday morning but it's all worth it! :)

A Lawyer by profession and the current SBMA Labor Department Manager Severo Pastor said in his speech that we have to realize that it's not really enough to clean the beaches only on Earth Day or some special occasion but we must do it more often.

According to Atty. Pastor, they will be holding a once-a-month coastal clean up every second Saturday of the month after this event.

I think more volunteers will steer their schedules to participate with this activities. And yeah, I will be joining more often as possible! :)

This activity drew more than 2,000 participants which consist of students, company workers, government officials and employees and many community organizations of Olongapo and Subic bay. It means and shows that people truly cares about the environment. It's just that we have to create the spark to mobilize the idea. :)

Participating with the activity is very easy. Just register and go to your group and start picking up trash from the surroundings and ENJOY!

How I love joining this events together with people who cares about the nature and the place where we live in. As part of the My Share team, we also shows support in the coastal clean-up drive by Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA).

We even wore our My Share uniform to be able to show our solid support for the environment's protection and beautification.

Combing the beach area under the sun is so fun! Bringing garbage bags and filling it up with something we picked from around the area is really a big help to make Subic bay a fantastic travel place.

People gets motivated seeing others do the same thing. We come together to save the beaches and the sea that tourist who visited Olongapo or Subic bay are excited to experience. We clean them and we know that this helps in the complete experience of those who visit for a vacation.

What really makes me enjoy the day is seeing our cute kids who learns to make a way to help us and do their thing even in a very little way to help save the environment for the future.

So cute!!! :) I had so much fun and learning today. I feel tired but satisfied. What we did is another investment for the future of the mankind. :)

Let's see where we can wander next time!!!! Hope you enjoy the story of a wanderer today! :)

On Board with MV Logos Hope

If you are familiar with the ship MV Doulos, the biggest floating library in the world where there were  between 3000 to 5000 books on the shelves and half a million in the hold that made her last world tour in 2009, then obviously you know what MV Logos Hope is.

Remembering our visit to MV Logos Hope in Subic.
Posing with me from left: Sherie Lynn Asistio, Ms. Cathy Crispo & Marivie Laxamana.
Twice as big as any previous ship operated by the German Christian charitable organization GBA Ships e.V (Gute Bücher für Alle, English: Good Books for All), MV Logos hope designed to replace MV Doulos which was retired and now sits on a rock shelf at the Chilean coast.

It is in March of 2012 when MV Logos Hope first docked in Subic Bay, Philippines carrying about 5000 books to showcase for Filipinos. We decided a trip on board and checked what's in it and so we could have it photo taken personally from our camera.

Me and my workmates pose in front of the US ship that docked beside the MV Logos Hope at the Alava Pier, Subic Bay.
Luckily, I got my friends and workmates company that make the tour more fun. We all love taking pictures and be taken too!!!

Can we just call that ship as 199? hehehe... I was entertained by the nice view of the water from here (actually its because this is I think my 1st time to be here).

We never care of how those people walking towards MV Logos Hope think when we had this picture taken... we just enjoying the moment and the opportunity to be shoot by our hobbyist workmate. :)

Just feeling the breeze... doing these cool things with them makes me realize how GOD works in simple ways. He always make us feel his presence. Living the life we want is something not to wish for. It's something we should plan and work for. This trip is actually a very practical and cost-effective way to a stress-free life.

I plan to do the same things often. :)

This is all ME in Ms. Cathy's dark shades and my personalized shirt from Artifact clothing.
Mavie in her stiff-neck pose. :)
When you board the ship, there will be a 5-minute orientation...

We sit on a red long chair for a short orientation.
....and a channel of many BIG chain of posters that shows the story of the prodigal son. Another spot where you can have lot's of memorable pictures with your friends. hehehe.

So let's get there... Inside the ship are books from all over the world. There are cooking, Painting, General knowledge, Philosophy, Math, Science, Marketing, Fiction, Religion, Business books, etc. Too much to mention... You will never feel your inside the ship... because it's like a BIG ROOM full of interesting BOOKS!!!!

Where there are books, there will also be tables and chairs... What for? to eat and again, have a picture taking!!! :) There is canteen there where you can buy candies, bread, cookies, some juices, shakes and ICE CREAM!...

We met few friends and get to know how's life with the MV Logos Hope and how these volunteering helps them to grow and develop as a person.

They became missionaries and they are happy. They travel for free and meet people around the world. And that's their life... a purposeful life.

We saw a board full of sticky notes. I love reading every bit of paper there. it's a drive to stop HIV. What do you think?

And that's all. We go downstairs bring these amazing experience with the MV Logos Hope and their missionaries crew.

That's all for now. Let's wait for the ships next visit to the Philippines!!! Don't forget to buy books as its proceeds help the missionaries make their mission accomplished.

A Glimpse of Ms. Silka Zambales 2013

The new beauties of Miss Silka Zambales 2013 strike a pose to end the event at Subic Bay's Ayala Harbor Point.
 - Photo grabbed from Mr. Allan Fabricante's facebook profile
After working from my full-time job of eight hours, five days a week, I always make sure I have time to treat myself for a job well done. Most of the times I get to have a two to three hour stay if not in Ayala Habor Point, I stay in SM Olongapo or some quick serving restaurants within the area.

Whenever I’m in Ayala Harbor Point I always check on the events happening in its activity center because I get to learn, entertained and appreciate how they showcase local talents and opportunities for local aspirants.

On October 30, I chance upon another event of beauty and wit with the Miss Silka Zambales 2013. There are I think is about 20 candidates with silka-beauty skin and very lovely faces. Although some were not that so sexy, I know the pageant is for how these gorgeous ladies carry a SILKA brand skin in the national pageant.

You know what, I really don’t have the details of the pageant as I just pass by and stop and watch. Hehehe…
Look what my camera has captured from the event. These are, for me, a camera-angle shots and interesting to share here.

With the recent success of our kababayan ( countryman ), now Miss World 2013, Miss Megan Young, the now preparing for the International competition Miss Earth Philippines Miss Angelee Claudette Delos Santos both from Olongapo city, and the competing Miss Universe Philippines from Laguna Miss Ariella Arida, truly it is our pride to have these kind of local pageants that hone start-up wannabes in the world of pageantry. We never know if someone from these gorgeous ladies will be on the hot spot for international pageants in the future.

Be a Gift of Life, Donate Blood and be a Hero.

"Be a hero, give blood...Let's support the blood drive"

I am standing right beside the sign that
says be a hero and donate blood.
Helping those in need may be in as little as giving healthy blood to organizations like the Philippine Red Cross. A bloodletting program facilitated by our Safety department with the Philippine Red Cross team in Olongapo City held a one-day bloodletting in our office to support and aid those in need of blood in the city.

While I cannot donate this time because I have a cold and they say when you feel sick you cannot donate. So I decided to just document what was happening so I can help show how bloodletting in our office goes.

I prepare my pen and notebook to take down notes and my very useful camera to catch some interesting scenes while volunteer nurses and doctors are in action.

Let's see what I can share a little while.
Flashing a smile. Ms. Marisa A. Vida and
Mr. Alvin Dulay with the Luntian boys.

I started looking for our company nurse to asked for some information about this activity. She is the one who made this all possible because she understands how every drop of blood counts to save a life. The name behind that is Ms. Marisa A. Vida. Look at her in the picture with the company nurse of Luntian Ladscaping & General Services and the Luntian boys who were there to donate blood too. Looks like a happy family picture! :)

They seem to be so calm... they were all making fun of each other and chit-chatting when I enter the hallway of the conference room where bloodletting will take place.

Ms.Marisa is busy assisting Red Cross team preparing the room and setting-up tables, chairs and collapsible beds for the donors while some PCSPC employees, their contractors and some other companies in the POL pier compound were arriving and registering for the program. Even that busy with the activity, she was able to free-up an extra minute to answer my questions on the procedures to be done, the requirements and the eligibility of the donor.

The Red Cross volunteer is helping a donor to fill-up
his registration form at the front desk.

The process involves in donating blood:

1.) Registration at the front desk.
2.) Fill-up Donor's form from the Red Cross team.
3.) Have a blood pressure Weight test.
4.) Blood typing and Hemoglobin check.
5.) Counselling and Physical Check-up.
6.) Blood extraction (will take 25min-30min).
7.) Rest and Refreshments.

A donor extends his left hand to prepare for a blood typing test and HGB check.

Red Cross volunteer is conducting a blood typing and HGB check with a donor.

An HGB count was conducted by another Red Cross volunteer
before issuance of  Red Cross card.
A Red Cross volunteer is serious in conducting a blood typing.

A Red Cross bag full of materials and supplies needed for the blood donation.

A Red Cross volunteer is preparing the bag and the needle to be used for
the person in bed reading a brochure about importance of donating blood.

A successful extraction with the donor will receive a certificate of appreciation
from the  Philippine Red Cross Olongapo City Chapter.

Hmm.. It seems donating our blood can really be as cool as that, not to mention the refreshments after that while resting. Hahaha.

According to Ms. Marisa and the Red Cross team, a person is eligible to donate a blood when he is in good health, if he is 16 to 65 years of age, weights at least 110lbs. or 50kg., has a blood pressure of between 130/90 to 110/70 and when he pass the physical and health history assessment. And that's it, you can be a donor!

I also asked them how often a person can donate a blood and what are some the circumstances that may disqualify them to donate?

Their answer :

"A person who successfully donates his blood may re-donate after three months. But make sure you do not undergone a tattooing, ear piercing, acupuncture, and other procedures involving needles. You might be disqualified until proven the procedures are sterile and one (1) year after that procedure.

How to Prepare Yourself before Donating Blood

  1. Make sure you have enough rest and sleep.
  2. Do not drink any medicine and alcoholic drinks prior to donating blood.
  3. Drink plenty of water and/or juice.
  4. Make sure you eat your meal before you donate.
  5. Ensure you have a healthy body before going to blood center.
Be a Gift of Life, Donate Blood.

It's really as simple as that to be a hero to others. In fact, it is our benefit too because we will be examined for FREE on blood type testing, hemoglobin count and the blood pressure test. It helps us to maintain a healthy production and circulation of blood and it personally feels great to know that we are safe and regularly have a blood checking.

Do's and Don'ts after donating blood:

Do's
  • Drink plenty of water and/or juice.
  • Drink more liquid four (4) hours after blood extraction.
  • Put pressure where blood was extracted.
  • Take a rest and have enough sleep.
  • Donate blood after 3 months.
  • If bleeding occurs, raise your hand and put pressure until bleeding stops.
  • If you feel dizzy, lay down and raise your feet in level above your body.

Dont's

  • Avoid heavy work after blood extraction.
  • Avoid too much bowing (pagyuko).
  • Do not drink alcoholic drink within 24 hours after the donation.
  • Avoid smoking 30 minutes after blood extraction.
  • Do not remove plaster from you within eight (8) hours to avoid bleeding.

And that's all for now folks. I hope that these are helpful tips and have give you idea of being a HERO by donating your blood. Things get easier and we became fearless because we have enough information on things we plan of doing.

Have a great day and HAPPY blood donating!!!
